| In late 2000, the NIHL began as a four team league,
with 45 players. The league was the brainchild of Greg Blakney, a
long-time resident in Asia and Singapore. It featured a mix of nationalities,
with Singaporeans accounting for one-third of all players. From this
modest start, the NIHL grew rapidly to add more teams and more players
under the guidance of many volunteers. Now in its’ sixth season
(2007-08), the league boasts more than 170 hockey players, 12 teams,
and three nights of ice hockey per week.
The NIHL is run by the Amateur Ice Hockey Association (Singapore).
The AIHA is a non-profit organization run by volunteers that seeks
to develop ice hockey in Singapore through its’ administration
and support of the NIHL and other related endeavours. The AIHA has
numerous activities for new and experienced ice hockey players in
Singapore, including the running of player development and referee
programs. The AIHA has also sponsored teams of local Singaporeans
to compete in regional tournaments regularly in the past. The ultimate
goal of the AIHA is to see hockey become a recognized sport by the
Singapore Sports Council.
Under the administration of the AIHA, the NIHL has not only seen
a growth in players and teams, it has received great support from
the Singaporean business community. Brewerkz, Continental Tires, The
Fez Bar, M1, Linear Technology, San Miguel and Subway help promote
ice hockey in Singapore through their sponsorship of both league and
tournament hockey.
The annual Singapore Invitational Ice Hockey tournament is also run
by the AIHA. Now in its’ fifth year, it features the best of
hockey in South East Asia. It successfully draws teams from around
Asia, and even Europe, to compete in one of two divisions. In the
International division, the Bangkok Flying Farangs team have been
the most successful entrant, winning the Cup in two separate years.
The Asian Division has teams from Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong,
Tokyo, and, of course, our homegrown Singapore Blizzards competing
against each other. Asian Division teams comprise players who are
nationals in their home country.
The NIHL runs from September to April of each year, with a summer
league in June and July.
